Before replacing OpenRouter, identify what you want to change. You might need a different model-selection method, a gateway you can host yourself, or more control over provider access. Those requirements lead to different shortlists.
This guide focuses on routing. It is written by NuRoute and includes our own product. There is no universal winner here, and we have not run a controlled test ranking these services against one another.
First, test the router you already have
OpenRouter offers Auto Router, which selects models by task using recent aggregate spending patterns, with cost tiers to steer the tradeoff. If you already use the platform, it is a useful baseline before taking on a new integration. OpenRouter Auto Router
Provider routing is a separate function: choosing where a model runs differs from choosing which model should answer. OpenRouter documents provider selection as well. Make sure your replacement solves the part you are dissatisfied with. Provider routing
NuRoute Artemis: evaluate a different selection method
Artemis estimates the quality and cost of candidate models for the request's task mix. On NuRoute Cloud, model: "auto" requests invoke that selection, subject to the documented fallback behavior. The response and decision trace identify which model served the answer. Artemis routing
This is worth testing when the selection decision itself is your concern: for example, whether inexpensive models can handle most extraction and drafting work while more capable models receive the difficult requests.
There are boundaries. Standard NuRoute is Artemis-only and uses NuRoute’s keys. Multi-provider access, individual-model selection and using your own provider keys are Enterprise gateway capabilities. Enterprise gateway charges are separate from model usage. Artemis is not currently included in self-hosted NuRoute, and response_format is currently ignored. Pricing, limitations
NuRoute plans an Artemis listing on OpenRouter. If that launches, using Artemis would not necessarily require replacing OpenRouter. The listing's model ID, pricing and supported controls must be confirmed at launch.
LiteLLM: configure and operate your routing stack
LiteLLM is worth considering when your team wants a self-hosted gateway and control over routing configuration. Its documentation covers deployment strategies and a beta Auto Router with several classifier options. LiteLLM routing, Auto Router
Evaluate the configuration you would actually deploy and maintain. Include time spent tuning routes and updating them when models change. A working demo and a production service have different operating costs.
Portkey: assess policy-driven gateway routing
Portkey documents conditional routing based on metadata, request parameters and request paths. That is useful when a business rule already determines the destination: a tenant's approved provider, a region restriction or a rollout cohort. Portkey conditional routing
If your real requirement is central administration, evaluate the gateway controls rather than assuming a general-purpose quality predictor is necessary. Rules can be easier to explain and test when the desired route is already known.
Direct provider APIs: keep the system simple when you can
For an application with one task and one model that already meets its quality and cost requirements, a direct integration is a valid baseline. Adding a router introduces another decision and another dependency.
You can revisit routing when the workload broadens or the evidence shows meaningful room to improve. There is little value in automatically selecting among models that perform the same way on your task.
Build a shortlist from your requirements
| Your main requirement | Start by evaluating |
|---|---|
| Keep OpenRouter and automate model choice | Its native Auto Router |
| Test Artemis's quality-and-cost estimates | NuRoute Cloud |
| Own the gateway and routing configuration | LiteLLM |
| Apply known business rules to provider selection | A conditional gateway such as Portkey |
| Serve one stable task with minimal infrastructure | A fixed model through a direct API |
Run the same representative requests through your shortlist. Compare accepted results per dollar, errors, full conversation cost and latency under realistic concurrency. Our router benchmark guide explains how to avoid a comparison that rewards longer answers or hides failed requests.
