Some requests have an obvious destination: this customer must use an approved provider in an approved region. Others leave a harder question: which allowed model is likely to answer this task well enough for the cost?
NuRoute’s standard offering is Artemis-only. Its multi-provider gateway is available through Enterprise; compare that offering with Portkey when you need gateway functionality. Compare how each product makes routing decisions, then check whether its controls fit your operating requirements.
This is NuRoute's comparison, based on documentation checked on 29 October 2026. We have not measured the products head to head. Portkey's current site also identifies the product as Prisma AIRS AI Gateway; confirm current packaging when evaluating it. Portkey product page
How requests reach a destination
Portkey documents conditional routing using metadata, request parameters and URL paths. It also documents fallback and load-balancing features. These are useful tools for implementing rules your team defines. Portkey conditional routing
NuRoute's Artemis estimates answer quality and cost for models in its pool, then selects according to a preset and the eligible candidates. The gateway applies provider and project restrictions around that choice. Individual-model selection is available through NuRoute Enterprise, rather than standard Artemis access. NuRoute routing
A policy and a prediction answer different questions. A model can be allowed but unsuitable for a task; it can also be capable but excluded by your policy. Test both independently.
Budgets need closer inspection than a feature checkbox
Portkey documents shared provider integrations with workspace access controls, budgets and rate limits. Portkey integration controls
NuRoute documents project budgets and project-scoped keys. With a positive monthly budget and the hard-limit option enabled, new requests are rejected after recorded spend reaches the threshold. The check can lag by up to 30 seconds, and requests already running finish. This is an enforcement mechanism, not a promise that the final bill can never exceed the threshold. Project budget alerts are not sent yet. NuRoute project budgets
Ask both vendors how concurrency, delayed usage records, retries and upstream billing affect enforcement. Also ask what happens when spending records are unavailable. These behaviors determine whether the control fits your application.
Compare the exact deployment and plan
| Requirement | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Routing | Configured rules, predictive selection, fallback behavior and model overrides |
| Budgets | Scope, update delay, behavior at the threshold and failure behavior |
| Debugging | Served model, request details, decision explanation and retention |
| Hosting | Cloud, hybrid or self-hosted availability for the required features |
| Billing | Platform charge, model usage, request overages and provider charges |
NuRoute's production documentation separates gateway plans from token charges. Artemis requests use NuRoute’s provider keys. Enterprise gateway customers can use their own keys for named-model requests. Feature availability varies by plan. NuRoute pricing
Self-hosted NuRoute currently excludes Artemis. Do not use a cloud Artemis benchmark to justify a self-hosted purchase. Deployment limitation
A useful trial includes deliberate failures
Alongside ordinary prompts, send a request for a blocked model, reach a small test budget, simulate a provider failure and try a malformed request. Confirm that each produces the expected route or error.
For answer quality, compare against your existing fixed model. If you evaluate NuRoute Enterprise, include named-model traffic for workflows that depend on reliable tool use. Standard NuRoute is Artemis-only. The current capability matrix does not grade tool-calling reliability, and response_format is ignored. NuRoute request handling
Which should you evaluate first?
Evaluate Portkey when your immediate need is a gateway with configurable policies and operational controls. Evaluate NuRoute when you also want to test Artemis's expected-quality and expected-cost selection on mixed tasks. Either choice still needs validation against your deployment, budget and output requirements.
