You have several providers, a growing AI bill and application code that should not need a rewrite every time a model changes. LiteLLM provides multi-provider gateway access. NuRoute’s standard offering is Artemis-only; multi-provider gateway access is available through NuRoute Enterprise.
The choice depends on how much routing behavior you want to configure, what you need to operate yourself, and which controls your team needs. It is not a choice between a product that routes automatically and one that cannot.
This page is written by NuRoute, using product documentation checked on 29 October 2026. It reports capabilities, not a measured performance ranking.
Both products offer routing
LiteLLM documents deployment routing strategies for cost, latency and load. It also documents a beta Auto Router with heuristic, classifier and custom routing options. The available settings depend on your release and configuration. LiteLLM routing, Auto Routing
NuRoute's Artemis uses a task profile, measured model-capability estimates and predicted answer cost to select a pool model. Presets set the tradeoff. You can inspect the selected model and decision record. Choosing individual models rather than Artemis belongs to the Enterprise gateway offering. NuRoute routing
| Question | NuRoute | LiteLLM |
|---|---|---|
| Can I use multiple providers? | Enterprise only | Yes, through the gateway or SDK |
| Can I request automatic model selection? | Artemis on Cloud | Documented beta Auto Router |
| Can I choose a model explicitly? | Enterprise only; standard access is Artemis-only | Yes |
| What determines routing behavior? | Artemis capability version, preset, eligibility and policy | Chosen strategy, classifier, tiers and configuration |
| Can I self-host? | Enterprise gateway; Artemis not currently included | Self-hosted gateway available |
The distinction is the selection system and the work you take on around it. Do not infer answer quality from the number of configuration options.
Provider keys and Artemis have different billing rules
NuRoute Enterprise supports your own provider keys for named-model requests. This is not part of the standard Artemis-only offering. NuRoute’s production pricing documentation says Artemis requests use NuRoute's provider keys and are charged at Artemis token rates. Gateway plans are billed separately. Connecting your own provider key does not turn Artemis into a BYOK router. NuRoute billing rules
For a LiteLLM deployment, budget for the model providers, infrastructure and staff time, together with any paid features or support you choose. Calculate the cost of the deployment you intend to run rather than comparing a managed service's bill with software license cost alone.
For either product, ask who handles provider outages, catalogue changes, monitoring, upgrades and incident response. Those responsibilities matter more as traffic grows.
Self-hosting changes the comparison
If your requirement is to run the gateway inside your infrastructure, assess the self-hosted products directly. A cloud routing benchmark does not describe a different self-hosted router.
NuRoute's self-hosted gateway currently uses its fallback router in place of Artemis. We do not present the cloud Artemis results as self-hosted performance. NuRoute self-hosted routing status
Also separate gateway hosting from model hosting. A gateway in your network can still send requests to an external provider. Map the full request path before making a deployment decision.
Evaluate a small, realistic workload
Pick one feature rather than moving every application at once. A support-summary feature is easier to judge than an unrestricted agent with many tools.
Keep its prompts and acceptance rules fixed. Compare your current model, one inexpensive fixed model, a configured LiteLLM routing setup and Artemis. Record total billable usage, rejected requests, completion time and whether each result passes your rubric. For agents, score the completed task and include tool failures and repeated turns.
NuRoute currently ignores response_format. Its routing documentation also recommends a fixed model for quality-sensitive tool workflows. Test that baseline through Enterprise or a separate provider; standard NuRoute is Artemis-only. Request handling
Which should you shortlist?
Shortlist LiteLLM when operating your own gateway and configuring selection behavior are priorities. Shortlist standard NuRoute when you want Artemis. Evaluate NuRoute Enterprise separately if you need multi-provider gateway access and individual-model selection. If you need self-hosted Artemis today, NuRoute's current offering does not meet that requirement.
